Hokies sweep past Orange

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team swept past Syracuse 3-0, (25-18, 25-21, 25-16) on Wednesday night at the Women’s Building in Syracuse, New York.

Lindsey Owens led the Hokies (16-14, 9-8 ACC) knocking down 20 kills while hitting .484 on the attack and tallying eight digs. Amanda McKinzie added 10 kills. Jordan Fish put up 22 assists and Kyra Coundourides added 16.

Megan Beckwith recorded 13 digs for the defense and Ashley Battle had five blocks, including a pair of solos.

The Hokies and Orange kept it close in the opening set and were tied at 12-12 around the midway point before Tech broke it open to go get out to a 16-12 lead off an ace from McKinzie. Syracuse closed it to three at 19-16, but the Hokies increased their lead to take a 22-16 advantage off another ace, this time from Owens. Tech rolled on to take the set 25-19.

Tech jumped out to the lead in the second set, going up 13-8. The Orange cut it down to a two-point difference at 14-12, forcing the Hokies to take a timeout. The teams kept it close with Syracuse closing it to one at 20-19. Tech outscored the ‘Cuse 3-1 over the next few rallies, going on top 23-20. The Orange scored once more, but kills from Owens and Battle on the final two rallies gave the Hokies the points to secure the set 25-21.

In the final frame, the Hokies took control early and were up 15-8 just past the middle of the set. Syracuse was unable to get anything going on the offensive side as Tech increased its advantage at 22-11. The Orange would get no closer than seven the rest of the way as the Hokies rolled to the 25-16 win.

Silvi Uattara had nine kills for Syracuse (8-21, 1-16 ACC). Monika Salkute added eight.

The Hokies will wrap up the schedule on Friday, Nov. 27 at Boston College. Match time is set for noon in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.
