BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team hit .358 on the attack to roll past Georgia Tech 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-14) on Saturday evening, completing the weekend ACC sweep and wrapping up the 2014 home slate.
Prior to the match, the Hokies recognized seniors Megan Beckwith, Kathryn Caine, Jordan Fish and LaTasha Samson-Akpan.
Lindsey Owens led the attack with 10 kills for the Hokies (15-14, 8-8 ACC). Amanda McKinzie and Samson-Akpan added nine each while Ashley Battle and Kennedy Bryan posted eight. Fish and Kyra Coundourides put up 23 and 22 assists, respectively.
Owens and Fish each posted double-doubles as Owens had 13 digs and Fish added 10 for the defense. Beckwith led with 14 digs. At the net, Samson-Akpan had three blocks.
The Hokies got out early in the opening set and were up 13-8 midway through off a kill from Caine. Georgia Tech cut it down to four at 14-10, but the Hokies went on a 6-1 run to go up 20-11. The Yellow Jackets failed to go on a run in the final rallies as the Hokies closed it out to win 25-18.
In the second set, the Hokies and Yelllow Jackets were tied at 11 before Virginia Tech scored three straight to pull ahead 14-11, forcing the Georgia Tech timeout. The Hokies maintained the advantage and went up 19-15 off a kill from Owens, but the Yellow Jackets chipped away at the lead, pulling within one at 23-22 and again at 24-23. A Georgia Tech error on the next rally gave the Hokies the point needed to clinch the set 25-23.
Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech were tied early in the third set at 7-7 before the Hokies used a 10-3 run to go up 17-10 off a block from Battle. The Hokies closed out the set, outscoring the Yellow Jackets 8-4, tallying six kills in the final rallies to win 25-14.
Teegan Van Gunst led Georgia Tech (12-17, 5-11 ACC) with 11 kills. Courtney Felinkski added seven. Defensively London Ackermann had 15 digs and Rebecca Martin posted three blocks.
The Hokies will be back on the court on Wednesday, Nov. 26 in a 7 p.m. match at Syracuse.
