BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team shuts out Wake Forest 3-0 (25-18, 28-26, 25-20) on Friday evening in ACC action at Cassell Coliseum.
“A good team effort, we played low error and earned a lot of points against a good offensive team in Wake Forest,” said head coach Chris Riley. “I am really proud of our team and the momentum that we have going at this point in the season.”
Lindsey Owens led the Hokies (14-14, 7-8 ACC) with 14 kills. Amanda McKinzie added nine kills and Ashley Battle had eight while hitting .462 on the attack. Jordan Fish and Kyra Coundourides put up 19 and 17 assists, respectively.
On the defensive side, McKinzie led in the backcourt with 11 digs and Megan Beckwith tallied 10. At the net, Kathryn Caine tallied six blocks while Battle and LaTasha Samson-Akpan had five each.
In the opening set the Hokies got out to the lead and were up 13-10 midway through. Tech extended its advantage with a 5-0 run to pull ahead 18-10 as Caine knocked down a kill. Wake Forest would get no closer than five the rest of the way as the Hokies rolled to the 25-18 win.
The second set was a battle between the teams with 16 ties and 11 lead changes. Tech and Wake were tied at the midpoint of the set at 13 and again at 15 before the Hokies broke open the scoring with a 5-0 run to take the 20-15 lead. The Deacs responded though with a 7-2 run, tying it back up at 22. The Hokies got to set point and were up 24-22 off a kill from Kennedy Bryan. Wake again answered as the two teams tied at 24, 25 and 26. An assisted block from Caine and Samson-Akpan followed by a Deacs’ error gave the Hokies the final two points to win the set, 28-26.
Virginia Tech took the lead in the third set, going up 15-11 of a block from Caine and Battle. Wake Forest cut it down to a one-point difference a few rallies later, trailing at 17-16. The Deacs kept it tight, tying it up at 20, but the Hokies responded with a 5-0 run to close out the set, securing it 25-20 and taking the match 3-0.
Kylie Long and Jazmen Russell each had nine kills to lead the Deacs (15-14, 5-10 ACC). Hanna Lee had five blocks for the defensive side.
The Hokies will wrap up the home slate Saturday, Nov. 22 in a 6 p.m. match against Georgia Tech at Cassell Coliseum.
