RADFORD, Va. - The Virginia Tech track & field team collected seven top finishes at Radford’s Highlander Invite on Friday and Saturday.

Tech dominated the 1500 meters with six top-10 finishes on the men’s side and five for the women’s team. Brent Musselman set a personal best time, clocking in at 3:52.49 to place first. Tessa Riley led the women’s team with a personal record, 4:28.01 to win the women’s event.

The pole vaulters highlighted Friday’s field events with six top-five finishes. James Steck cleared a season-best 5.16 meters (16-11) to take first while Jeffrey Linta took third. Erica Hjerpe led the women’s team with a second place finish that matched her career best mark of 4.23 meters (13-10.5). Hannah Meador, Erinn Schaal, and Emma King shared the third place result, all clearing 3.78 meters (12-4.75).

Kacia Vines led the group of long jumpers, taking first with a 5.66-meter (18-7) mark.

In the discus, Marek Barta’s 58.64-meter (192-4) throw earned him second while Jordan Roach took third.

On Saturday, the Hokies’ success in the track events continued with respective second and fourth place finishes by Shanel Burr and Jada Gundran in the 100-meter hurdles. Burr led the pair with a 13.66-finish in the finals. Aaron Simpson led the men’s team taking second in the 110-meter hurdle.

Dante Price matched Simpson’s finish with a second place mark of his own in the 100-meter dash, clocking in at 10.76.

In the 400 meters, Jack Strollo set a new personal best of 49.36. The 4x100-meter relay team set a new season best time of 41.65.

Shannon Quinn led the Hokies in the 800 meters with her second place finish in 2:10.45 to set a new personal best time. Shalonda Mitchell, Tessa Riley, Anne Grumbine, Alyssa Shupe, and Jennifer Fleming also posted top-10 finishes. Andrew Goldman led the men’s team in the 800 meters, placing 10th in at 1:55.97.

Alex Merritt posted a first place finish in the 400-meter hurdles while Price took third in the 200 meters to wrap up the track events in Radford.

Emily Miller and Tomas Kruzliak added top finishes in the Hokies’ field events. Miller’s 1.62-meter (5-3.75) clearance in the high jump won the event while Kruzliak won the hammer throw on his second attempt, marking 66.30 meters (217-6). Ryan Shepard rounded out the events for the day, placing second in the men’s high jump with a 1.88-meter (6-2) mark.

Tech’s distance runners will compete on Sunday at Stanford’s Payton Jordan Invite.

The Hokies wrap up their regular season Wednesday at the Liberty Twilight meet before hosting the Roanoke Outdoor Classic at the Johnson/Miller Track Complex on Thursday, May 5.
