ALBUQUERQUE, N.M – Seven members of the Virginia Tech Track & Field team will be competing to win a national championship this weekend at the 2014 DI Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Amanda Smith, competing in the women’s 800-meter race, Martina Schultze, competing in the women’s pole vault, Torben Laidig competing in the men’s pole vault and Tihut Degfae, Leoule Degfae, Martin Dally and Grant Pollock, competing in the men’s distance medley relay, all qualified for the meet by posting some of the top finishes in the nation throughout the season.
Smith earned her bid after posting a season-best mark of 2:05.25 at the ACC Championships, making her the 14th fastest person at that distance in the nation.
Schultze posted the third-highest mark in NCAA this season with a jump of 14’5.25” (4.40m) in the women’s pole vault at the ACC Championships.
Laidig surpassed his career-best at the ACC Championships in the men’s pole vault with a mark of 17’10.5” (5.45m) ranking him 11th in the NCAA so far this season.
The men’s distance medley relay team qualified after posting a time of 9:30.26 at the Alex Wilson Invitational hosted by Notre Dame, making them the 10th fastest team in the nation.
Martina Schultze, Amanda Smith and the men’s distance medley relay team will compete on Friday evening. Smith’s race will be a semifinal heat with the top finishers qualifying for the finals on Saturday while the women’s pole vault and distance medley relay are both finals. Torben Laidig will compete in the men’s pole vault on Saturday evening.
