BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech track & field team kicked off their final home meet of the year with some extremely impressive performances during day one of the Virginia Tech Challenge held at Rector Field House on Friday evening.
In the men’s one-mile race, competing unattached, Patrick Joseph, finished in second place with a time of 4:07.78, his best time of the season, while teammate Vincent Ciattei, also competing unattached, finished in fourth place with a time of 4:10.37, a personal best.
Marcus Finney earned a third place finish in the men’s 60-meter finals with a time of 8.12, his personal best, while teammate Daniel McFadden finished just behind him with a time of 8.21, also a personal best.
In the men’s 3000-meter race, Daniel Jaskowak, competing unattached, won the race with a time of 8:24.95 while teammate Neil Gourley, also competing unattached, finished in second place crossing the finish line at 8:26.49.
The women were equally as successful. In the women’s 3000-meter race, Alex Watt earned a first-place finish after a phenomenal come from behind performance. For the majority of the race, Duke’s Ashley Berry led the way, but with a final kick during the last two laps, Watt was able to power her way to victory with a time of 9:55.41, her personal best at the distance. Madalyn Nuckols ran her way to a third place finish with a time of 10:05.34.
Ciara Simms earned a fourth-place finish in the women’s 60-meter final with a time of 7.61, her fastest time this season.
The Hokies will be back in action tomorrow afternoon for the final day of the Virginia Tech Challenge while some other members of the team will be competing at the Alex Wilson Invitational. Events at the Virginia Tech Challenge and the Alex Wilson Invitational begin at 11 a.m.
