CLEMSON, S.C. – Freshman Annjulie Vester won the women's hammer throw, while junior All-American Alexander Ziegler (hammer) and freshman Luka Mustafic (shot put) earned runner-up finishes as members the Virginia Tech track & field team wrapped up competition Saturday on day two of the Clemson Tiger Qualifier at the Rock Norman Track & Field Complex.
Vester won the women’s hammer as she notched a season-best mark of 198-10 (60.61m), good for fourth on the all-time performance list at Tech. Entering the weekend, Vester’s mark ranks in the top-10 of the NCAA East Region and the top-25 of Division I.
Ziegler and fellow junior All-American Denis Mahmic were the top collegians as they finished second and third in the men’s hammer throw. Ziegler, the defending national champion in the event, posted a mark of 225-9 (68.81m), while Mahmic recorded a best throw of 199-7 (60.84m).
Mustafic was the top collegian and finished second overall in the men’s shot put with a throw of 57-8.5 (17.59m).
Tomorrow, Tech will compete in its final two last chance meets of the weekend as the sprinters and jumpers travel to NC A&T’s Aggie Classic, while the distance group will run at NC State’s Wolfpack Last Chance.
This weekend’s meets serve as a last chance for student-athletes to qualify for the NCAA East Preliminary Meet, which will take place May 24-26 at North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla. The top-48 declared student-athletes and top-24 relays in each region per event qualify for the NCAA Preliminary Meet. The top-12 athletes from each region (East and West) then advance to the NCAA Championship at Drake in Des Moines, Iowa, from June 6-9.
