CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Virginia Tech softball team wrapped up its regular season in strong fashion with a much-needed 9-2 win at Boston College Sunday afternoon at Shea Field.

For the third game in a row, the Eagles struck in the first inning, this time plating a pair of runs on a two-out triple to right field. In the third inning, Logan Spaw led off with a single before trotting home on Lauren Gaskill’s fifth home run of the season, a line shot to right field. The home run was Tech’s 60th of the season, setting a new program record for home runs in a season.

In the fourth inning, Kelsey Mericka crushed an offering to left field for her 16th home run of the season. That mark tied Megan Evans’ school record for home runs in a season and gave the Hokies a 3-2 lead. Later in the inning, Logan Spaw lifted her eighth career sacrifice fly to score Vanessa Gonzalez, the second most in program history.

Tech tacked on five big insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning when Mericka singled to left field to drive in Jessie Mehr and Gaskill and then Michelle Prong hit her 10th home run of the season, a three-run shot to straightaway center field to put the game away.

At the plate, the Hokies had 11 hits, led by three from Gaskill and two from both Mericka and Bailey Liddle, along with one apiece from Prong, Mehr, Gonzalez and Spaw.

Maggie Tyler (W, 15-11) went the distance, allowing two runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

The Hokies enter postseason at 34-20, 9-14 in the ACC and will open the 2015 ACC Softball Championship with second-seeded North Carolina on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Tech Softball Park.
