BLACKSBURG - The NC State softball team completed a three-game sweep of the Hokies with a 13-4 win in five innings Monday night at Tech Softball Park. The Wolfpack won both ends of the doubleheader on Sunday.

The Wolfpack (32-19, 13-8 ACC) scored a pair of unearned runs in the first inning on a single from Morgan Tharrington. NC State kept the pressure on with an RBI single and then a two-RBI double to make it 5-0, all with two outs in the inning.

Kelsey Mericka walked to lead off the second inning for the Hokies and then Michelle Prong’s double to the gap plated her from first base. After Prong moved to third base on a wild pitch, she slid home under the tag thanks to Logan Spaw’s suicide squeeze bunt.

After the Hokies loaded the bases in the third inning, but failed to score, Tyler Ross’ three-run home run to left field stretched the Pack’s lead to six runs. Tech again left the bases loaded in the fourth inning, and again, NC State made the Hokies pay as it scored five more runs in the fifth inning, capped by Renada Davis’ three-run home run to left-center field.

Tech came back with a home run of its own in the bottom of the fifth inning as Vanessa Gonzalez cranked a two-run shot to left-center field, her fifth of the year to account for the final score.

The pitching staff allowed 13 runs on the evening, but only four of them were earned after two costly errors kept long innings alive. Kelly Heinz (L, 12-4) couldn’t get out of the first inning, but wasn’t helped by her defense as an error led to all five runs given up being unearned. She went 2/3 of an inning, allowing five runs on four hits with a walk. Maggie Tyler went 3 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on three hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Mikaela Aiken pitched an inning, allowing five runs (one earned) on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

At the plate, the Hokies had three hits, coming from Gonzalez, Prong (2 HBP) and Spaw. McGoldrick drew a pair of walks and was hit by a pitch to reach base three times. Tech left seven runners on base, leaving the bases loaded twice.

Tech (33-16, 8-12 ACC) will return to action on Wednesday for a non-conference doubleheader at James Madison. The Dukes are ranked 13th in the latest NCAA RPI, but Tech beat them 3-2 in eight innings earlier this season in Jacksonville, Florida.
