BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech softball team dropped a pair of ACC contests to NC State Sunday afternoon at Tech Softball Park, falling 4-0 and 2-0.
In the opener, NC State turned a two-out walk into a run thanks to a double down the line in the top of the first inning. That’s the way it stood until the Pack cashed in with three more runs in the sixth inning to put the game away.
The Hokies started the game with singles from Lauren Gaskill and Kylie McGoldrick, but managed just a single from Caroline Schoenewald and a double from Kelsey Mericka the rest of the way.
Kelly Heinz (L, 12-3) went four plus innings, allowing one run on five hits with three walks and six strikeouts. Wolfpack hurler Emily Weiman struck out 11 and allowed just four hits in picking up the shutout.
The second game was scoreless until the fifth inning when NC State (31-19, 11-8 ACC) pushed across a pair runs on a home run from Molly Hutchison.
For the second game in a row, Weiman shut down the Hokie offense, this time allowing just one hit, a single from McGoldrick. She struck out just six batters this game, but induced 12 ground balls and three fly or pop outs.
Tyler (L, 14-9) took the loss, going the distance. She allowed two runs on nine hits with three walks and 10 strikeouts.
In between the games, the program honored its five senior players: Gaskill, McGoldrick, Bailey Liddle, Logan Spaw and Michelle Prong, plus senior manager Erin Guida.
Tech fell to 33-15 overall, 8-11 in the ACC with the sweep.
The two teams will play a single on Monday night at 7 p.m., which will be televised nationally by ESPNU.
