GREENVILLE, N.C. - Freshman Mikaela Aiken tossed a five-inning no-hitter, striking out seven, as the Virginia Tech softball team blew past Seton Hall 18-0 on a chilly Saturday morning at the ECU Softball Stadium as part of the Pirate Invitational.
The Hokies came out on a chilly morning with hot bats, scoring two runs in the first inning. Kylie McGoldrick doubled in Lauren Gaskill for the first run, and McGoldrick came home on Kelsey Mericka’s sharp single to left field.
In the second inning, McGoldrick, Katey Smith and Kelsey Mericka hit back-to-back-to-back home runs for the first time in program history and Michelle Prong laced an RBI single to center field to make it 8-0. Mericka crushed a two-run home run in the third inning to give the Hokies an 11-0. A bases-loaded walk by Breanna Davenport put the 12th run on the board.
In the fourth inning, Alyssa Clark connected on her first career home run, a two-run shot to left field and Davenport and Gaskill came up with RBIs to give Tech a comfortable 16-0 lead.
The Tech offense had a big game, posting a school-record five home runs and a school-record 14 walks. Mericka led the way with three hits and four RBIs. She had two more home runs to give her seven this season already. Gaskill had three hits and an RBI to go along with three runs scored. She now needs four more runs to set a new school record for career runs scored. McGoldrick had two hits and four RBIs while Smith also had two hits. Clark, Jessie Mehr, Michelle Prong and Caroline Schoenewald all had one hit.
The story of the game was Aiken (W, 3-0), who shut down a Pirate offense that came in with 16 home runs on the season. She walked three, but struck out seven and got several great plays late in the game from her defense to preserve the no-hitter. It’s the first no-hitter thrown by a Tech pitcher since Kelly Heinz tossed one early in the 2013 season.
The win was No. 699 for head coach Scot Thomas.
Tech (10-1) will return to action later today, taking on the host Pirates at 4 p.m.
