Tech opened the scoring in the first inning when freshman Vanessa Gonzalez launched a solo home run to left-center field and then Amanda Ake took the team lead in home runs with a three-run blast to centerfield, her ninth of the year. With the bases loaded, Lauren Gaskill crushed a double off the wall to clear the bases.
In the second inning, after Katey Smith doubled, Dani Anderson lifted a two-run home run to right field to give the Hokies a 9-0 lead. Bailey Liddle’s two-run home run later in the inning made it 11-0.
At the plate, Gaskill and Anderson led the way with two hits apiece while Gonzalez, Smith, Ake, Liddle, Michelle Prong and Alyssa Clark each had one.
For the game, the Hokies hit four home runs to give them 47 for the season, breaking the school record for home runs in a season of 46 set in 2012. The four home runs in the game tied the school mark for home runs in a game, achieved five previous times.
In the circle, Maggie Tyler (W, 14-5) went three innings, allowing no runs on two hits with two strikeouts. Kelly Heinz pitched the final two innings, allowing two hits while striking out three.
Tech will jump back into ACC play this weekend, taking on the University of Maryland (5-30, 3-11 ACC) in a three-game set at College Park. The two teams will play the doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. and then the single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
