HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech softball team split a pair of games at James Madison Wednesday evening, downing the Dukes 5-2 before falling 2-1 in the nightcap. Junior Dani Anderson had four hits in the double dip to lead the way for the Hokies.

In the opener, JMU took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning, but Tech scored five unearned runs in the fifth inning to seize control. With two outs and a runner on third base, Bkaye Smith hit a hard chopper to the shortstop that was mishandled, allowing Anderson to score. Kylie McGoldrick singled up the middle to plate Smith and then, with the bases eventually loaded, Logan Spaw hit a double off the wall in center field to allow Lauren Gaskill, Nina Compton and Courtney Liddle to score. JMU scored one more in the fifth inning, but couldn’t get anything going in the seventh as the Hokies held on for the win.

Kelly Heinz (W, 12-3) was in control for the Hokies, allowing two runs on seven hits with 11 strikeouts in the complete-game effort.

At the plate, Anderson led the way with three hits while McGoldrick had two hits. Gaskill, Liddle and Spaw each had one.

In the second game, JMU grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Tech committed two errors on ground balls. That’s the way it stood in the sixth inning until Spaw hit a flare to right field to score Compton. In the bottom of the seventh, JMU scored a run to end the game on a Tech throwing error to win 2-1.

Jasmin Harrell (L, 10-6) went 6.2 innings, allowing two unearned runs on four hits with five strikeouts.

Tech had five hits, one apiece from Spaw, Liddle, Anderson, Betty Rose and Kat Banks.

Virginia Tech (24-10) came into the game with an NCAA RPI of 24th while JMU (28-10) had an RPI of 41st.

The Hokies will jump back into conference action this weekend, taking on Boston College (10-22, 1-8 ACC) in a three-game series at Shea Field in Chestnut Hill, Mass. The two teams will play the doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. and then will play the single game on Sunday starting at noon.
