ORLANDO, Fla. – The Virginia Tech softball team completed a successful first day at the UCF Spring Fling with a 7-3 win over the host UCF Knights Friday night at the UCF Softball Complex. The win comes on the heels of a 15-5 victory over Monmouth earlier in the day.

The Hokies struck early with a run in the first inning when freshman Dani Anderson lifted a fly ball to deep center to score Kat Banks from third base on the sacrifice fly. In the second inning, the Knights hit Tech starter Jasmin Harrell hard, scoring two runs and forcing a pitching change for Tech.

The game stayed 2-1 until the top of the fourth inning when Courtney Liddle led off the inning with a towering solo home run to straightaway center to tie it up. Kristen Froehlich and Betty Rose followed that up with consecutive singles and moved up on a sacrifice bunt from Kelsey Hensel. Froehlich scored on Bkaye Smith’s infield single and on the play, Rose scored when the throw was errant.

Trailing 4-2, the Knights kept fighting, getting a run back in the fourth inning on a two-out single to cut the lead to one. The game remained tight until the seventh inning when the Hokies broke it open thanks to sloppy fielding by the Knights. Tech loaded the bases and Froehlich grounded a pitch right to the pitcher, but her throw home for the easy force was way off-target, allowing Richelle McGarva and Dani Anderson to score. The Hokies tacked on one more run on an RBI groundout by Betty Rose that allowed Liddle to score.

As was the case in the first game of the game, Tech’s starting pitcher ran into trouble early and had to be relieved by Kenzie Roark. Harrell went 1.1 innings, allowing two runs on three hits and didn’t factor into the decision. Roark (W, 8-1) went 5.2 innings in relief, allowing one run on three hits with a walk and a strikeout.

The Hokies had seven hits in the game, led by two apiece from McGarva and Froehlich. Liddle, Rose and Smith each had one in the win.

Tech (13-3) will be back in action on Saturday, taking on South Alabama at 9:30 a.m., followed by a game with Florida A&M at 2 o’clock.
