Hokies sweep Boston College with walk-off win on Sunday

Jack Owens' bases-loaded single gives Tech 4-3 victory in 10th inning

BLACKSBURG – With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning, Virginia Tech’s Jack Owens singled through the left side scoring Mac Caples to give the Hokies a 4-3 walk-off win over visiting Boston College on Sunday afternoon in ACC action at English Field at Union Park.

With the win, Tech (17-13, 6-6 ACC) swept the series against Boston College for the fourth straight time in Blacksburg – as the Hokies have won 12 straight over the Eagles at home. It also evened the team’s record in the ACC after 12 games – tying for the second-best start ever to a conference season for Tech.

The Hokies were up 2-0 after two on sacrifice flies by Sam Fragale in the first and Rahiem Cooper in the second, but the Eagles chipped away at their deficit to tie the game in the eighth.

Boston College (8-17, 1-11 ACC) then took its first lead of the series in the top of the ninth on a Donovan Casey RBI single, one of his three hits in the game, that scored Jack Cunningham.

Tech battled back, though, with two outs and runner on first to tie the game. Owens hit a two-out single and Ryan Tufts came inches from a three-run walk-off home run – but his RBI double tied the game and sent it into extra innings. It was Tech’s only extra-base hit of the game

Packy Naughton (2-4) tossed 5.1 innings of relief with five strikeouts to pick up the win after Kit Scheetz went 4.2 and struck out three.

• Cooper: two hits, sixth multi-hit game of the season, 16th of his career.
• Owens: three hits, 15th multi-hit game of his career, eighth game with at least three hits; also reached base for the 21st straight game.
• Tufts: double, 15th of the season, 37th of his career; two hits, 15th multi-hit game of the season, 43rd of his career.

• Registered its 13th walk-off win under head coach Patrick Mason, eighth against an ACC opponent.
• Swept just its ninth ever ACC series, and the sixth at home, which includes four against the Eagles.
• Improved to 17-5 overall against Boston College all-time in Blacksburg, including 12 straight at home, dating back to the 2010 season.
• Were hit by three pitches on the day to push season total to 55. The Hokies were third in the nation coming into the weekend in HBPs.
• Turned a double play, the team’s 33rd of the season. The Hokies were second in the nation entering the weekend.
• Won its first extra-inning game of the season, and are now 1-3.
• Matched its second-best start to in conference play (2010, 2015), while the 2013 at 7-5 is still the best mark after 12 ACC games.

• Tech will take a couple days off before returning to competition on Wednesday when they face Marshall at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston, West Virginia. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
