BLACKSBURG – After taking two games against Alcorn State on Saturday evening by a combined score of 18-6, the Virginia Tech baseball team completed the three-game sweep over the Braves with a 23-7 victory in nonconference action at English Field at Union Park on Sunday. Sam Fragale, Phil Sciretta and Mac Caples all drove in four runs, while Ryan Tufts crossed the plate four times to lead the offensive attack.
The 23 runs scored by Tech were the most since putting up 35 at Georgetown (35-4) on April 21, 2002. It was the 25th time the Hokies have scored at least 23 runs in a game and the last time in a home game was versus High Point on March 25, 1999 (23-13).
Fragale and Caples had two double each as the Hokies totaled 10 in the game, tying a school record set back on April 24, 1998 versus North Carolina A&T. Fragale also added a two-run home run as part of Tech’s second 10-run inning – they scored 10 runs in both the second and fifth.
They Hokies also finished one hit-by-pitch shy of tying that single-game record, as they were hit by six pitches – the school record is seven versus Duquesne (ironically two days after doubles record) April 26, 1998.
Picking up the win on the mound for the Hokies was Connor Coward, who improves to 1-1 on the year. Andrew McDonald (2.0), Cole Kragel (1.0) and Luis Collazo (1.0) completed Tech’s pitching rotation as the game went just seven frames due to a travel curfew for Alcorn State.
How the runs were scored
- Alcorn State (15-32) put the first run on the board in the first, with Cedric Bell scoring Wallace Rios with an RBI single and actually scored in five of the seven innings – with a three-spot in the third. Bell had another RBI single in the frame, while Collin Carroll hit a two-run double.
- Tech (18-31) scored in just three innings, but did a whole lot of damage in two of them.
- In the first, Sciretta (sacrifice fly), Nick Anderson (RBI double) and Fragale (RBI double) gave the Hokies a 3-1 lead.
- Tech sent 15 players to the plate in the second and put 10 runs on the board. Key hits in the frame were by Tufts (2 RBI single) and Sciretta (2 RBI double).
- The Hokies again sent 15 to the plate and scored 10 runs in the fifth, with Fragale hitting a two-run home run and an RBI double in the inning and Mac Caples knocking in four on two doubles

The Hokies take the week off before welcoming Wake Forest to Blacksburg for a three-game ACC series with the Demon Deacons. First game at English Field at Union Park is set for Friday at 5:30 p.m.
