BLACKSBURG – Entering the sixth frame, the Virginia Tech baseball team was tied with its in-state visitors William & Mary at 2-2. The game quickly turned into a slugfest with the Tribe outpacing the Hokies the rest of the way and picking up the 12-8 victory at English Field at Union Park in nonconference action on Tuesday night.

Saige Jenco, who tied a career-high with a four-hit evening, put Tech up in the bottom of the sixth, 6-5, capping a four-run frame with a two-RBI single that plated Matt Dauby and Joe Freiday, Jr., his second run of the game.

William & Mary, though, reclaimed the lead in the seventh with three runs and added four more insurance runs in the eighth to get the win.

Out of the bullpen, Charlie Fletcher earned the win on the mound and improved to 2-1, while Tech’s Chris Monaco suffered his first loss of the season.

How the runs were scored

  • Tech (10-20) got two on the board in the second with four singles. Grant Maiorana led off the frame with a hit and moved to third on Joe Freiday, Jr.’s one-out hit. Saige Jenco then beat out an infield grounder that scored Maiorana and Freiday, Jr. raced home on a Tribe error after Ryan Tufts also notched an infield single.
  • William & Mary (15-12) cut its deficit in half in the third on Josh Smith’s fifth home run of the season, a solo shot down the left field line.
  • The Tribe tied the game in the fifth when Hunter Smith was hit by a pitch, stole second and moved to third on a fly out to center. He scored on Kyle Wrighte’s grounder. Charley Gould gave the Tribe their first lead of the game on a three-run home run.
  • The Hokies answered with four runs with Dauby and Freiday, Jr. picking up RBI singles before Jenco brought them both home with his own single.
  • An error allowed two unearned runs to score in the seventh and Wrighte capped a four-run eighth with a two-RBI double that gave his team a 12-7 advantage.
  • Tech’s Sam Fragale (RBI single in seventh) and Grant Maiorana (sacrifice fly in ninth) provided the final two runs for the Hokies.
