RADFORD, Va. – Senior Matt Dauby tied his career-high with three hits, including an RBI single in a four-run second inning for the Virginia Tech baseball team, however, Radford scored in seven of the eight frames they batted in and registered a 12-8 victory in nonconference action Tuesday night at RU Baseball Stadium.

The Hokies also scored two runs in the second on a Sam Fragale single and got an RBI from Saige Jenco to take a 4-1 lead. Solo home runs by Phil Sciretta and Andrew Mogg also kept Tech close over the middle frames.

Radford’s Tyler Swarmer went six innings to get the win and improve to 1-2, while Travis McQueen pitched the last three for his first save. Nic Enright took the loss for Tech and is now 1-2.

How the runs were scored

  • Radford (5-16) used a couple Tech errors in the first to plate its first run.
  • Virginia Tech (10-12) struck for four in the second with Max Ponzurick starting the rally with a hit-by-pitch. With one out, Dauby followed a Mogg single with one of his own that plated Ponzurick. Fragale then doubled to left center to score two, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a Jenco grounder to second.
  • The Highlanders answered with two in the second, three in the third and one in the fourth to push their advantage to 7-4.
  • Sciretta, to lead off the fifth, and Mogg, who led off the sixth, each hit a solo home run to pull Tech to within a run at 7-6.
  • Jonathan Gonzalez hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to push the Radford lead to four and the teams traded single runs in the seventh and eighth to account for the final scoring.
