BLACKSBURG – Liberty jumped out to an early 13-run advantage after its first three at-bats then cruised to a 22-7 victory over the Virginia Tech baseball team on Tuesday night in a nonconference game at English Field.
Tom Stoffel and Ryan Tufts each drove in a pair of runs, while Saige Jenco crossed the plate two times to lead the Hokies attack.
Liberty starter Geoffrey Murphy (1-1) picked up the win, while the Hokies’ Andrew McDonald suffered the loss and is now 1-2 on the year.
How the runs were scored
- Liberty (12-6) plated three runs in the first, three runs in the second and seven in the third to take a 13-0 lead. Andrew Yacyk drove in four during the stretch, Payton Scarbrough had three, as did Will Shepherd, who have five RBIs on the night.
- Tech (10-8) cut into the deficit with a single run in the home half of the third and six in the fourth. Jenco and Grant Maiorana knocked in single runs before Stoffel hit a two-run double and Tufts added a two-RBI single.
- The Flames used a four spot in the seventh and five in the ninth to secure the win.
Inside the Box
- Jenco: 2 runs, sixth multi-run game of the season, 24th of his career; registered his 150th career hit at Tech.
- Maiorana: with single in the second, extended reached base streak to 14 straight games.
- Stoffel: 2 hits, seventh multi-hit game of the season, 13th of his career; 2 RBIs, team-leading seventh multi-RBI game of the season and career.
- Sciretta: with walk in third, extended on-base streak to all 18 games this year.
- Tufts: 2 RBIs, second multi-RBI game of the season, fourth of his career.
- Ryan Lauria: career-high 4.1 innings pitched; career-high four strikeouts.
- Culver Hughes: career-high four strikeouts.

- Tech ends its 11-game homestand with a 6-5 record.
- Hokies will play 12 of their next 16 games on the road.
