BLACKSBURG – Despite an early deficit, the Virginia Tech baseball team scored in five of the first six innings en route to an 11-8 victory over the visiting Campbell Camels in nonconference action Wednesday afternoon at English Field.

Highlighting the Tech attack was freshman Grant Maiorana, who had three RBIs, two runs scored and hit his first collegiate home run. Classmate Chris Meador also scored twice and had two RBIs, which sparked a five-run second frame that put the Hokies in the lead.

Earning the win on the mound for Tech in a relief effort was Ryan Lauria (1-0), while Connor Coward picked up his first save of the year. The Camels’ Alex Yarem dropped to 0-1 with the loss.

How the runs were scored

• Tech (8-5) scored in the first on an RBI triple by Phil Sciretta that brought home Grant Maiorana, who walked and then stole second.
• Campbell (7-6) responded with four runs in the top of the second, with Kyle Prats getting a key two-out, two-RBI double.
• The Hokies answered in the home half with five runs, as Meador doubled home a pair, Saige Jenco plated one and Tom Stoffel picked up an RBI.
• The Camels tied the game in the third on Zach Minnick’s single, part of a two-run frame.
• Tech answered again, with Maiorana doubling home two runs and Stoffel again picking up an RBI.
• Maiorana hit a solo home run in the fifth and Matt Dauby singled home Phil Sciretta in the sixth to complete the Hokies scoring.
• Campbell closed to within three with two runs in the seventh, and it could have been more, if Stoffel did not throw out Minnick at the plate to end the frame.

• Maiorana: Two runs, third career multi-run scoring game. Two hits, second multi-hit game. Three RBIs, third multi-RBI game. Stolen base, third of the year.
• Stoffel: Two RBIs, fifth career multi-RBI game. Fifth career outfield assist, second this season.
• Sciretta: Three hits, eighth multi-hit game of season, 26th of career. Fourth time in career with at least three hits. Extended reached base streak to all 14 games this season with triple in the first. First career triple.
• Tufts: Five straight games with a run scored. Tech is 6-2 when he scores.
• Dauby: Two runs, fourth multi-run scoring game of season, ninth of career. Two hits, fifth multi-hit game of season, 13th of career.
• Meador: First career start. First multi-run scoring game. First multi-hit game. First multi-RBI game.
• Chris Monoca: First career start, after 20 relief appearances.
• Lauria: First win on the mound for Tech. Career-high 2.2 innings pitched.
• Coward: First collegiate save. Tied season high with three strikeouts.

Additional Notes

• Tech improved to 17-9-1 on this date, which includes an 8-4 record at home. The win ended a two-game slide.
• The Hokies are now 15-10 all-time versus Campbell, holding a 6-5 record at home.
• Tech is currently 5-2 on its longest homestand since the 2010 season.
• The six double-digit run outputs before the team’s first ACC game is tied for the second most with the 2011 squad, while the 2009 team had seven.

The Hokies take a day off before continuing their 11-game homestand with their first ACC weekend of the season. Tech will welcome No. 5 Miami to English Field for a three-game set that starts on Friday.
