CHARLESTON, S.C. – A five-run first inning highlighted by Sam Fragale’s grand slam sparked the Virginia Tech baseball team’s offense and Kit Scheetz’ quality start helped the Hokies register their first win of the year, a 12-0 victory over the The Citadel on Sunday afternoon at Riley Park.

Scheetz earned his first win of the year after silencing the Bulldogs offense over 6.2 innings. He allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out six. Cole Kragel (1.1), Luis Collazo (0.2/2K) and Culver Hughes (0.1/K) combined in the shutout effort. For The Citadel (2-1), Morgan Foulks took the loss after only getting one out in the first.

How the runs were scored

• Tech (1-2) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first, with Saige Jenco scoring the team’s first run on an RBI single by Tom Stoffel. The Hokies then loaded the bases for Fragale, who cleared them with a grand slam.
• The Hokies tacked on three more in the second, with Stoffel scoring Grant Maiorana, who double to lead off the frame, and Andrew Mogg plating a pair with a double.
• Phil Sciretta (single) and Max Ponzurick (double) each knocked in a run in the third to push the Hokie advantage to 10-0.
• Sciretta would add an unearned run in the fifth when he scored from first on a two-out fly ball to left, which was dropped.
• As a pinch hitter in the sixth, Stevie Mangrum singled home Ryan Tufts to push the Tech lead to 12-0.

Inside the Box

• Jenco extended his reached-base streak to 23 straight games and scored a pair of runs, his 19th multi-run scoring game at Tech.
• Stoffel scored two runs, his fifth career multi-run scoring game, and knocked in two, his third career multi-RBI game.
• Sciretta had a career-high tying three hits for his third multi-hit game of the season, the 21st of his career, and scored twice, his fourth career multi-run scoring game.
• Ponzurick scored twice for his second multi-run scoring game of the season, third of his career.
• Fragale had two hits, his fifth multi-hit game of his career, two runs, his third multi-run scoring game, and a career-high four RBIs, his third multi-RBI game of his career.
• Fragale’s grand slam was the first for the Hokies since Andrew Mogg hit one at Pittsburgh (May 16, 2015). It was the first nonconference grand slam since Mac Caples hit one versus Radford (April 6, 2015).
• Mogg tied a career-high with three hits, his 13th career multi-hit game, while he notched his fifth career multi-RBI game with a pair.
• Mangrum registered his first career hit and RBI with his single in the sixth.

Additional Notes

• With the win, Tech evens its overall series with The Citadel at 11 wins each, however this was the first of the 22 games that either team was shutout.
• The Hokies also improved to 9-1 on this date in their history with their only loss back in 2014 at LSU.
• The Hokies pitching staff posted their first shutout of the season, after getting just two a season ago.
• Tech reached the 12-run scored plateau just six times last year – its first time lasat year was not until March 7 (game 13).
• The last time Tech outscored its opponent by 12 or more runs was May 2, 2012 when the Hokies defeated VMI, 18-0. The last time they beat a team on the road by 12 or more runs was March 8, 2011 at Florida Atlantic (14-2).
• Sciretta and Fragale have each registered at least one RBI in each of the team’s first three games.
• Scheetz tossed six full scoreless frames, pushing his career total to 77, while four of them were perfect, giving him 35 for his career. He also notched his ninth quality start for the Hokies.
• Kragel and Hughes made their collegiate debuts.

Tech is scheduled to play its home opener on Tuesday against ETSU with first pitch slated for 3 p.m. at English Field.
