BLACKSBURG - Just two days after completing their sweep of in-state rival Virginia, the Hokies welcomed another in-state opponent to English Field for a midweek nonconference contest Tuesday evening and the Liberty Flames defeated the Virginia Tech baseball team by a 12-5 count.
Liberty (13-6) struck early, scoring four second-inning runs and had built a seven-run cushion by the end of its at-bats in the sixth frame.
Tech (10-10) plated single runs in the home half of the sixth and eighth innings. Phil Sciretta registered his third pinch-hit RBI single of the season that scored Erik Payne for the first run and Miguel Ceballos scored on Liberty's third double play of the night in the eighth that made it 7-2.
The Flames padded their lead in the ninth with five runs and when Becker Sankey hit his second home run of the game, a grand slam, Liberty led 12-2.
That made a difference as Tech plated three runs in the bottom of the ninth on a solo home run by Andrew Mogg, while Ryan Tufts and Logan Bible also crossed the plate later in the inning. The Hokies had the bases loaded in the ninth before Alex Close got a strikeout to end the game.
Erik Payne, Brendon Hayden, Mogg and Ceballos all had two hits in the game.
