GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech baseball players Mark Zagunis, Brad Markey and Jon Woodcock were among the 50 ACC student-athletes named to the 2014 All-ACC Academic Baseball Team as announced today by Commissioner John Swofford.

Zagunis, a junior catcher from Cinnaminson, New Jersey, highlights the team for the Hokies, as he is named to the team for the third straight year – only accomplished once before by a Tech baseball player in the league. He joins Michael Seaborn (2009-11) as the only other Tech player to be named three straight years, while Anthony Sosnoskie (2007-08, 2010) was a three-time All-ACC Academic Baseball Team member in a four-year span.

Zagunis, a sociology major, is also one of 15 players on the team to make the All-ACC first or second team announced at the end of the regular season and one of eight ACC players to be named a third time this season.

Brad Markey, a senior pitcher from Bel Mar, Maryland, was honored for the second straight season, making the team in his only two seasons as a Hokie. Markey, a management major, becomes the fifth Tech player to make the team twice. Both Zagunis and Markey were chosen in the 2014 MLB Draft by the Chicago Cubs and are currently playing professionally in the minor leagues of the organization.

Woodcock, a junior pitcher and psychology major from Ojai, California, makes the team for the first time in his first season with Tech.

The ACC’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year was Gage Smith of Florida State. The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award was established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the award must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.

To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic team, a student-athlete, regardless of classification, must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career. To view the entire team, click here.
