GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – In a revival of the neutral-site rivalry that was formerly played in Kingsport, Tenn. on five occasions starting in 1995, Tennessee defeated Virginia Tech 5-3 in the 2013 Hokie-Smokey Classic at Pioneer Park on Tuesday night.
Tennessee (17-18) scored four runs through the first two innings, which included a three spot in the first. Taylor Smart had a big hit in the first, a two-out, two-RBI double.
Tech (22-16) responded with its own three-run frame in the third, as Kyle Wernicki scored on an RBI single by Gary Schneider and Sean Keselica followed with his fourth home run of the season.
The Volunteers added an unearned insurance run in the sixth and the Hokies answered back with Alex Perez scoring on a grounder by Schneider, his second RBI of the game.
Jake Joyce closed the game for Tech, tossing 2.1 scoreless frames and striking out a career-high six batters to keep the Vols off the board.
However, Eric Martin and Andy Cox combined to throw the final 2.2 innings for Tennessee, with Cox picking up his first save of the year for Blake Thomas, who went 6.1 innings and improved to 2-0. Colin O’Keefe took the loss and is now 0-2 on the season.
The Hokies will stay on the road for the weekend, traveling up to College Park, Md., for a three-game ACC series with the Maryland Terrapins starting on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
