BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech used an 8-0 spurt early in the fourth quarter to reclaim the lead and did not relinquish it, as the Hokies won their third league game of the season by recording a 68-62 victory Thursday night on Carilion Clinic Court.

The Hokies moved to 14-7, 3-5 on the season ahead of Sunday’s clash with Miami.

“Obviously, it’s a good win for us,” Virginia Tech head coach Kenny Brooks said postgame. “I’m very proud of the kids, but also happy for them. Georgia Tech is a good basketball team, very physical, probably the most physical team in the league and to be able to endure that physicality and still come away with a win is really big for our program. I feel like we really need to win games like this for our program to be able to grow.”

Virginia Tech jumped out to a 21-12 lead in the first quarter after shooting 52.9 percent from the field. Alexis Jean, Kendyl Brooks and Taylor Emery each made 3-point field goals, with Emery’s coming in the closing seconds.

The Jackets (13-8, 2-6) went a 10-3 run in the second quarter to cut the lead to three points after Kierra Fletcher’s jumper with 1:52 on the clock. The Hokies went into the locker room with a 33-29 advantage.

Georgia Tech took advantage of its size in the post, creating second-chance opportunities from 23 offensive rebounds. In the third quarter, a 13-4 Jackets run gave them the lead.

Aisha Sheppard’s back-to-back triples with 7:52 on the clock keyed the Virginia Tech start to the fourth quarter that saw the Hokies take hold of the game for good.

Free throws down the stretch from Emery and Regan Magarity put the game away, as the Hokies ended their three-game skid.

Emery finished with 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting, and Sheppard recorded a solid statline: 11 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.

GAME NOTES
• Magarity recorded her 10th double-double of the season (12 points, 12 rebounds). She also crept closer to the 1,000-point plateau, standing at 988 for her career.
• Emery tallied 20 points for the 10th time this season. In her past five games, the junior is averaging 22 points per game.
