Hokies falter against Duke 86-75
Emery's 30 points not enough as Tech turns its attention towards Virginia Sunday afternoon

BLACKSBURG – Taylor Emery lit up the scoreboard on Carilion Clinic Court Thursday night to the tune of 30 points, but it wasn’t enough to propel the Hokies to victory, as they eventually fell 86-75 to No. 15 Duke.
Tech’s record now stands at 13-6, 2-4 in the ACC.
“Obviously we’re disappointed, we’re not into moral victories,” head coach Kenny Brooks said. “You know, we feel we can move past that. I thought we played well in spurts tonight but against a team like Duke you have to do more than spurts.”
Tech held an eight-point advantage with less than two minutes in the first half, but Duke erased the deficit, tying the game at 37 with a 3-pointer at the buzzer from Lexie Brown.
“You have to finish the second quarter leading into halftime which was critical,” Brooks said. “We had an eight-point lead and allowed them to tie it back up. I thought the momentum really swung in their favor from that point on.”
The Blue Devils (15-4, 4-2), used that momentum in the third quarter to gain some breathing room on Tech, making 13 of 16 shots in the quarter.
The Hokies tied a season-high with 13 made 3-pointers on the night, with Emery tallying six, Alexis Jean adding three and Aisha Sheppard and Kendyl Brooks each knocking down two.
Tech outrebounded the Blue Devils, with Regan Magarity pulling down 13 and Emery recording seven of her own.
Haley Gorecki paced Duke with 28 points and Brown added 23.
GAME NOTES
• Tech’s 75 points were the most Duke has allowed all season.
• Haley Gorecki’s seven made 3-pointers were the most made by an opponent in Cassell Coliseum’s history.
• The Hokies’ 33 3-point field goal attempts were the most in program history.
• Taylor Emery went over the 20-point mark for the ninth time this season.
