BLACKSBURG – Chanette Hicks scored the 1,000th point of her career in the fourth quarter Thursday, part of her 12 on the afternoon, but it wasn’t enough for the Hokies (11-3), who dropped the opening game of the conference season.
Hicks became just the 25th player in program history to accomplish that feat.
NC State (12-2, 1-0) used a 56-31 advantage on the glass to spark the victory, the first for a visitor to Carilion Clinic Court at Cassell Coliseum this season.
The Hokies led 13-12 after the first quarter, but surrendered a 7-0 run midway through the second frame giving State a six-point advantage that they did not relinquish.
Four members of the Wolfpack scored in double figures, including Chelsea Nelson’s game-high 19, Akele Maize and Kiara Leslie who each had 14 and Aislinn Konig added 11.
Tech struggled from the field, shooting just 29.2 percent, including knocking down a season-low four 3-pointers on 4 of 24 shooting beyond the arc. Regan Magarity once again paced the Hokies with 17 points on the afternoon, while corralling seven rebounds.
Forward Alexis Jean made her return to the floor for Tech, after over a month on the sideline due to injury. She scored one point and grabbed two rebounds in limited minutes off of the bench.
The Hokies are back on Carilion Clinic Court on Sunday, Dec. 31 as they take on the Boston College Eagles. Tip is set for 2 p.m. and the game can be seen on ACC Network Extra.
