BLACKSBURG – Regan Magarity continued her stellar play, scoring 20 points to lift Virginia Tech to a 90-52 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore in a non-conference game Wednesday evening at Carilion Clinic Court.

The Hokies won their third straight game and moved to 8-2 on the season. The victory also served as the 650th in program history. UMES fell to 1-6 on the season.

Tech, which committed 11 turnovers in the first 20 minutes, actually trailed late in the first half, but scored the last nine points of the half to take a 32-35 lead at halftime. The Hokies then blew things open in the third quarter after making 12 of their first 14 shots from the floor to start the second half.

A 12-0 run capped by a Chanette Hicks layup gave the Hokies a 49-29 edge and a 13-0 run to end the third period pushed the Tech lead to 71-38 – and basically sealed the win.

“We played extremely well in the third quarter,” Tech head coach Kenny Brooks said. “We got some easy looks.

“We’ve got to get better. We’ve been talking about focusing and getting kids just to understand the little things about competing at this level and competing each and every day, and we’re not there yet. But if you can continue to win as you build it, then that’s a good thing.”

How good was the Hokies’ third period? They made 12 of 16 from the floor, including seven 3-pointers.

Taylor Emery scored 19 points for the Hokies, who shot 47.5 percent from the floor and made 12 3-pointers. Kendyl Brooks and Michelle Berry each added 12.

Martha Thompson led UMES with 12 points.
