BLACKSBURG – Behind a new career-high 28 points from Regan Magarity, the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team defeated Radford 68-42, Sunday afternoon at Carilion Clinic Court.
It was the Hokies’ eighth consecutive victory over the Highlanders, the longest streak in the series’ history.
Leading by just six points at the half, Tech used a 16-6 advantage in the third quarter to pull away from a scrappy Radford team.
“You give a lot of credit to Radford. Mike McGuire does a tremendous job over there,” Tech coach Kenny Brooks said. “What they want to do is force you to play at their tempo, and when that happens, you become a little bit disjointed because we like to get it out and go. We weren’t able to do that tonight.”
The Hokies scored six fast break points on Sunday, three days after pouring in 20 against Illinois.
Three Hokies tallied in double figures, with Chanette Hicks registering 12 and Taylor Emery adding 10 on 55 percent shooting from the floor.
Magarity’s big night -Tech was paced by Magarity’s career night, shooting 11 of 22 from the floor. She also grabbed 12 rebounds, securing her second consecutive double-double, her fifth of the season.
“Regan played out of her mind,” Brooks said. “If she can have 28 and 12 every night, sign me up.”
Berry provides frontcourt rebounding depth - Forward Michelle Berry came off the bench and played 21 minutes Sunday afternoon and pulled down a team-high 13 rebounds. Berry, who averages 5.0 rebounds per game in 14 minutes, has seen her contributions increase in part to cover for the absence of Alexis Jean.
“She played extremely well against Illinois, so she’s strung two games back-to-back that are very, very productive,” said Brooks. “I think that will help her confidence, so I was very proud of her.”
