Hokies lead start to finish in big 96-49 victory Thursday night

CHAMPAIGN, ILLINOIS – Tech jumped out to a 25-9 lead in the first quarter and never looked back Thursday night in their Big Ten/ACC Challenge victory from the State Farm Center in Champaign, Illinois.
The Hokies shot nearly 53 percent from the field including 45.5 percent (10 –for-22) from beyond the arc, while playing stifling defense forcing 16 turnovers.
A pair of Hokies tallied double-doubles as Regan Magarity recorded her fourth of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
Chanette Hicks, who kick started the team with her energy in the first quarter, finished with 20 points, 13 assists, seven rebounds and six steals. In the fourth quarter she threatened going for the program’s first ever triple-double, before being subbed out in the final minutes.
Rachel Camp followed up her double-double performance against West Virginia by scoring 18 points and six rebounds starting once again for the second consecutive game.
Tech scored 90 points for the second time this season, after putting up 99 in the season opener.
GAME NOTES
• Chanette Hicks recorded six steals against the Illini, moving her career total to 246, just six behind Virginia Tech’s all-time career leader Taquia Brittingham.
• Kendyl Brooks continued her impressive shooting streak, knocking down a three-pointer in her 16th consecutive game.

The Hokies are back on Carilion Clinic Court on Sunday, Dec. 3 at 2 p.m. when they take on New River Valley rival Radford.
