Tech drops final game of Paradise Jam to West Virginia
Hokies take second place, Emery named to Tournament All-Stars team

MELBOURNE, Fla. – A slow start and the Mountaineers’ hot shooting from beyond the arc led to the Hokies dropping a second consecutive game Saturday night from Titan Field House. Rachel Camp was a bright spot for Tech, making her first start of the season and responding with her fourth career double-double with 15 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
West Virginia hit nine triples on the night, many with the shot clock running down. Guard Chania Ray went 5-of-7 from beyond the arc, scoring 17 points on the game and controlling the tempo.
Teana Muldrow tallied a double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds including 8-of-13 from the field.
The Mountaineers took advantage of the absence of Alexis Jean in the post, who was a game time scratch. Jean, who averages 8.6 rebounds per game, was replaced in the lineup by the 5-foot-10 Camp, who finished the game as Tech’s leading rebounder.
Tech trailed by 14 at the half, but showed signs of a comeback in the third when Chanette Hicks went on a personal five-point run to cut into the deficit, but the Mountaineers responded with runs of their own to put the game out of reach.
Regan Magarity stuffed the stat sheet with 18 points, six rebounds, two assists, four steals and one block.
Hicks had nine points, four rebounds, four assists and one steal, coming just one shy of tying the Paradise Jam record of 23 set by Chelsea Gray of Duke in 2013.
Taylor Emery was just 3-of-11 from the floor Saturday night, scoring seven points, her lowest tally of the season. Over the course of the Paradise Jam, Emery averaged 17.3 points, placing her third in the Island Division, earning her a spot on the All-Star team.
With three teams concluding their tournaments 1-2, Tech took the second place spot on tiebreakers.
GAME NOTES
• Rachel Camp’s double-double was the fifth of her career and first since Dec. 14, 2014 against Western Carolina.
• Chanette Hicks recorded one steal against West Virginia, moving her career total to 240, 12 behind Virginia Tech’s all-time career leader Taquia Brittingham.
• Kendyl Brooks continued her impressive shooting streak, knocking down a three-pointer in her 15th consecutive game.
UP NEXT
The Hokies will travel to Champaign, Ill. For the first time in program history to take on the Illinois Fighting Illini in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Thursday, Nov. 30. Tech has won its last two Challenge games, defeating Nebraska 76-67 last season at Cassell Coliseum and Penn State 64-59 in 2016.
