Hokies set to begin Paradise Jam

MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team is set for tipoff at the 2017 Paradise Jam from Titan Field House on the campus of East Florida State. Tech will play against Island Division opponents, Drexel, Butler and No. 11 West Virginia on consecutive days.

It will be the Hokies’ first ever appearance at the Paradise Jam and first Thanksgiving week tournament since 2011-12 when the squad competed in the SMC Concord Hilton Tournament in Anaheim, California.

Below is a snapshot of each of the Hokies’ upcoming matchups this week.

vs DREXEL (2-1)
Thursday, Nov. 24, 2:30 p.m.

The Dragons, from the CAA have begun the season 2-1 after falling to Penn State on opening night and defeating La Salle and Bucknell. In its most recent outing, Drexel beat Bucknell 63-54 behind 13 points from Aubree Brown and another 12 from Sara Woods.

Kenny Brooks is familiar with Drexel and head coach Denise Dillon, having battled each other for 13 years in the CAA with James Madison. Brooks is 19-9 all-time against Dillon and the Dragons.

Drexel is led in scoring by guards Brown (13.3) and Woods (11.0) and forward Bailer Greenberg’s 10.3 points per game.

vs BUTLER (3-1)
Friday, Nov. 25, 6:30 p.m.

Butler started the season 3-0 with wins over Austin Peay, Murray Stats and Lipscomb before falling to No. 17 USF on Monday night.

The Bulldogs are led by two 19.0 point per game scorers, Tori Schickel and Whitney Jennings.

vs No. 11 WEST VIRGINIA (3-0)
Saturday, Nov. 26, 6:30 p.m.

The Mountaineers are off to a 3-0 start after wins over Central Connecticut State, Sacramento State and North Florida.

West Virginia is led in scoring by forward Teana Muldrow who is averaging 25.7 points, sixth in the nation. Guards Naomi Davenport (18.0) and Katrina Pardee (16.0) add to the depth of the squad.

Other Hokie notes heading into the tournament

• Forward Regan Magarity is coming off of consecutive double-doubles against USC Upstate and UCF. On the season she is averaging 11.0 points and 10.2 rebounds per game.

• The Paradise Jam was originally scheduled to take place in the U.S. Virgin Islands and was relocated due to the devastation from recent Hurricanes.

• Sharpshooters Kendyl Brooks, Taylor Emery and Aisha Shepard have each knocked down a 3-pointer in each of the Hokies’ first four contests. Brooks has knocked down at least one in 12 straight games and 32 of 36 career games.
