Hokies open 2017-18 in spectacular fashion
New faces shine in Tech debut

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team (1-0) defeated the Wagner Seahawks 99-32 on Friday afternoon at Carilion Clinic Court at Cassell Coliseum to open the 2017-18 campaign. It was the fifth consecutive season-opening win for the Hokies.
Taylor Emery led seven Hokies in double figures with 20 points on 4 of 6 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc. Alexis Jean added 16, while Kendyl Brooks and Regan Magarity each tallied 12.
“It was a great start,” Tech head coach Kenny Brooks said. “Obviously, when you have so many new faces, you have no idea what to expect. The kids came out, played well together. We can score in bunches at times, but really focusing on the defensive end, trying to get tougher.”
The Hokies played stellar defensively, forcing Wagner (0-1) into 35 turnovers, with Tech being credited with 14 steals. Chanette Hicks came up with three, while Michelle Berry, in her first game as a Hokie, grabbed a team-high four.
Tech pulled away with a 30-point run between the 4:06 mark in the second quarter and 8:00 in the third. That span included six buckets scored on the fast break, as Rachel Camp, Aisha Sheppard and Emery ran the floor.
“I thought Alexis Jean played tremendous at the beginning, got us off to a great start,” Brooks said. “Taylor picked it up. Regan was steady. I thought Aisha Sheppard did a good job of getting some of the jitters out.”
Jean and Emery played their first career games for the Hokies, combining for 36 points in 40 minutes.
The Hokies hit from 3-point range early and often in the game, going 13 of 29 overall.
Kendyl Brooks, picked up where she left off last season, hitting four triples, while Emery also connected on four.
The 67-point margin was the largest in program history, and the 99 points scored were the most since 2007.
Next up: The Hokies are back home on Carilion Clinic Court at Cassell Coliseum on Monday at 7 p.m. when they tipoff against the Auburn Tigers.
