Catching up with Chanette Hicks
Junior guard on Rondo, the ACC, her next best sport and more
October 29, 2017
Editor’s note: with 12 days until the start of the season, we caught up with No. 12 Chanette Hicks
Q: What has basketball taught you that carries over into other areas of your life?
HICKS: “Many things, like time management and how to be on time and manage basketball and school, all while not having anyone to tell you when to do it. It’s taught me discipline and a lot of life lessons, especially from Coach Brooks.”
Q: Who do you model your game after?
HICKS: “I try my best to be like [Rajon] Rondo, just not the shooting aspect. I tried to work on my shot this summer, and hopefully this year it will be a lot better. But Rondo is who I admire the most.”
Q: What was a memorable practice you had and what did you learn?
HICKS: “My first practice this year with the new team was very memorable for me. It was very good as our first practice together; the energy was great. I got to see how my season is going to be with the new pieces and I enjoyed it.”
Q: What is one thing you are most looking forward to about this season?
HICKS: “The conference season. Because we were picked 11th, I can’t wait to see what happens in conference play. I just can’t wait to see what it’s like in the gauntlet of the ACC.”
Q: How have you become such a good defender?
HICKS: “I think I was always very fast, and I can anticipate things very well. My old coach used to teach me to go get the ball and not hesitate, so if I see the ball I try to go get it.”
BONUS ROUND
Q: If you didn’t play basketball what VT team would you try out for?
HICKS: “Swimming. I’m a very good swimmer.”
Q: What do you like to do in your free time?
HICKS: “I enjoy coloring and drawing, or just hanging out with my teammates.”
Q: Describe Kenny Brooks in a sentence
HICKS: “I love how excited he gets—Coach Brooks is very passionate about point guards.”
