BLACKSBURG – Sami Hill has been named to Canada’s Senior Women’s National Team that will compete in the FIBA Women’s Americup 2017 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, following an impressive exhibition tour in China.
The Cup, played every two years between nations in North, South and Central America as well as the Caribbean, features 10 teams split into two groups. The Cup serves as a qualifying tournament for larger competitions like the Olympics and the Basketball World Cup.
Group A features the U.S. Virgin Islands, Venezuela, Brazil, Argentina and Columbia. Canada, the cup holders from 2015, is paired with Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Cuba and Mexico in Group B. In the group stage each team plays one game against the other nations in its group with the top two in each group advancing to the semifinal round.
The top three finishers in this tournament will earn a bid to the 2018 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Spain.
Canada is the No. 6 ranked team in the world and second-best behind the USA in the Americas. As Olympic champions, the USA is not in the field for the 2017 Cup as they have already qualified for Spain 2018.
Team Canada tips off its title defense on Sunday, Aug. 6th against Cuba.
