Panousis to compete for Australia at World University Games

BLACKSBURG – Recently graduated Virginia Tech women’s basketball guard Vanessa Panousis will represent Australia as a member of the Australian Emerging Opals at the 2017 World University Games in Chinese Taipei, August 19-30.

Panousis will join five others who are currently enrolled or recently graduated from universities in the United States, including fellow ACC player Alex Sharp of Wake Forest. Also on the team are six individuals who are enrolled in universities in Australia.

The Australian Emerging Opals won the gold medal in 2007 and took home bronze in 2005, 2009, 2011 and 2013. The team finished fifth in 2015.

Australia will compete in Group D where the Opals will face Russia (last year’s bronze medalists), Lithuania and Argentina in the pool stage. The United States have won the past four gold medals and will be joined by Canada (2015 Silver) as well as China and Japan.

August 21: Australia vs. Lithuania, 8 a.m.
August 22: Australia vs. Argentina, 5:30 a.m.
August 23: Australia vs. Russia, 12:30 a.m.
August 25: Quarter-Finals
August 26: Semi-Finals
August 28: Grand Final
