Hokies advance past Rider, 76-62, in WNIT first round
Magarity tallies 15th double-double: 25 points, 12 rebounds

BLACKSBURG – Regan Magarity tallied her 15th double-double of the season to help the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team advance past Rider with a 76-62 win in the opening round of the 2017 WNIT on Friday evening at Cassell Coliseum.
“This time of year the motto is just survive and advance,” said head coach Kenny Brooks. “I thought we did just that. I thought we played really well in the first half. We came out and had good energy. I thought Chanette [Hicks] and Regan were both tremendous. In the second half, we just really got away from doing the things that got us the lead. We got a bit lackadaisical in our defense and they kept coming after us, chipping away at the lead. They never gave up. We have to play much better if we’re going to continue on this run.”
Magarity’s 25 points and 12 rebounds gave the sophomore her 15th double-double of the season and tied her with Uju Ugoka (2013-14) for the Tech single-season record. Magarity also tallied three blocks on the defensive side. Chanette Hicks added 21 points, five rebounds and two assists. Samantha Hill chipped in 19 points and tallied six rebounds and four steals.
Tech and Rider opened the game keeping it close before the Hokies used an 11-2 run midway through the first quarter to go on top 17-6 with 1:30 on the clock. Virginia Tech was on top 22-11 heading into the second, but the Broncs opened the frame, outscoring the Hokies 7-0 to close it to four early. The rest of the second quarter was all Hokies as they outscored Rider 23-1 to go into the break up 45-19.
The Broncs looked to make a run coming out of the intermission and used a stretch of outscoring Tech 13-5 to get the deficit under 20 with 2:23 to go in the third. The Hokies pushed their lead back to 21 early in the fourth, but Rider again responded and closed it to 63-50 midway through. The Broncs kept it under 20 the rest of the way, but got no closer than 14 in the final minutes.
Virginia Tech held the advantage on the boards 47-31, including 17 offensive boards for 19 second-chance points. The Broncs forced the Hokies into 22 turnovers and capitalized for 25 points. Tech connected on 44.6 percent from the field while Rider hit 38.3 percent.
Kamila Hoskova led the Broncs with 18 points. Stella Johnson and Lexi Posset each added 13 while Julia Duggan chipped in 12.
The Hokies will be in action in the second round of the WNIT on Sunday, March 19 when Tech hosts Navy in a 2 p.m. game at Cassell Coliseum.
