Hokies host Rider on Friday in WNIT

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team is headed to the postseason for the 14th time in program history and will host the MAAC’s Rider on Friday, March 17 at 7 p.m. in the opening round of the 2017 Women’s National Invitation Tournament. .

Tech posted a 17-13 mark this season and had wins over NCAA teams Tennessee, Auburn and UNC Asheville, as well as fellow WNIT participants Georgetown, Radford, Central Florida and Wake Forest. Rider finished the season with an 24-8 record and is making its first appearance in the WNIT.

Virginia Tech is making its fifth appearance in the WNIT and it marks the Hokies 14th time making postseason since the program's first trip in 1994. Tech has advanced as far as the semifinals in the WNIT, which was during the Hokies 2002 trip to the tournament.

Tickets will go on sale Tuesday at HokieTickets.com. Cost is $10 for adults, $5 for youth/student.

The second round of games is scheduled for March 18-21. The Postseason WNIT features 32 first-round games, beginning Wednesday through Friday, March 15-17. The event culminates Saturday, April 2, with the championship game, which will be televised live on CBS Sports Network beginning at 3 p.m. ET. Each round of games will be played at campus sites. The event offers 32 automatic berths, one to each established conference, and 32 at-large berths.
