Hokies fall short against Clemson in ACC Tournament
Magarity has 14th double-double of the season

CONWAY, S.C. – Tied at 66-66 late in the fourth, Clemson hit one of two from the line with three seconds to go to outlast the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team on Wednesday afternoon in the first round of the 40th Annual ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament in Conway, South Carolina.
Regan Magarity led the Hokies (17-13) with 24 points and 14 rebounds for her 14th double-double of the season while tallying a career-high six blocks. Chanette Hicks added 20 points, five assists and three steals. Samantha Hill tallied 14 points.
“We’re very disappointed because I felt like they played hard enough to win a basketball game,” said head coach Kenny Brooks. “They left everything out on the floor but some things didn’t go our way and as a result Clemson comes away with a one-point win. I’m very proud of my group. I thought they fought through a lot of adversity especially the last couple of weeks. We’ve been shorthanded, but no one has made any excuses; they’ve gone out and they’ve played and they’ve played extremely hard. So I’m really, really excited about where they are and where they’ve come, but obviously we’re very disappointed with today.”
Virginia Tech and Clemson kept it close in the opening quarter with the Hokies holding a 13-9 advantage at the end of the frame. The Tigers cut it to two to start the second, but Tech answered with 16-4 run over the next four minutes to go on top 29-15 with 4:42 to go. Clemson battled back though with a run of its own, outscoring Tech 12-3 the rest of the way, cutting the Hokies lead to 32-30 at the break.
The teams traded baskets to open the third before Clemson used a 6-0 run to take a four-point lead. Tech stayed within striking distance, but the Tigers maintained and went on top 50-43 with 47 seconds to go before the Hokies closed out the quarter with four unanswered points to close it to 50-47 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Clemson took its largest lead of the game midway through the quarter, going up 60-52, but Tech responded as Magarity hit back-to-back layups, cutting it to four a minute later. The Tigers scored on their next possession, but this time it was Hicks’ turn as she hit back-to-back layups to close within two. Tech and Clemson were tied heading into the final minute as Hill drained a pair of free throws. The Tigers again scored, but Vanessa Panousis hit a jumper to knot it at 66-66 with 27 seconds to go. An unfortunate foul call on the Hokies sent CU’s Danielle Edwards to the line with three seconds to go where she sank the second in a pair to help secure the win.
Tech hit 41 percent from the field to Clemson’s 39.4 percent, but the Tigers had more chances at the line, connecting on 11-of-19 to Tech’s 10-of-16. The Hokies also forced 16 turnovers for 20 points, but Clemson held the 48-33 advantage on the boards for 17 second-chance. Tech committed just 10 turnovers in the contest and tallied nine blocks.
Danielle Edwards led the Tigers (15-15) with 17 points. Nelly Perry added 16 points and Aliyah Collier tallied 10 while Jaia Alexander grabbed 10 rebounds.
The women’s basketball postseason selections will be announced a week from Monday.
