Hokies open 40th Annual ACC Tournament against Clemson

Tech and Tigers to play 1 p.m. Wednesday at HTC Center

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech women's basketball team is set to open the 40th Annual ACC Women's Basketball Tournament on Wednesday, March 1 against Clemson. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at the HTC Center in Conway, South Carolina.

THE HOKIES (17-12, 4-12 ACC)
Virginia Tech defeated Boston College 82-79 to wrap up the regular-season. Regan Magarity led the Hokies with a career-high 26 points and 16 rebounds. Kendyl Brooks added a career-high 23 points, connecting on 7-of-12 from outside the arc. Chanette Hicks tallied 14 points, nine assists and three steals while Samantha Hill tallied 13 points and seven boards.

The Hokies came out firing in the opening quarter, connecting on 6-of-10 from outside the arc. Tech took a 24-14 lead in to the next frame, but the Eagles fought back, opening the second with an 11-5 run to cut it 29-25. Brooks a 3-pointer to push the Hokies back up by seven, but BC kept chipping away at the lead and tied it up 38-38. A layup from Hicks in the final minute gave the Hokies the 40-38 advantage at the break. Coming out of the intermission, Magarity went on her own 9-4 run to put the Hokies on top 49-42. The Eagles kept it close, cutting it to five a few times over rest of the frame, but the Hokies took a 58-50 lead into the final 10 minutes. Tech pushed its lead to the largest of the day, on top by 16 with three to go, but the Eagles kept battling and used a 12-2 run to cut it a 77-71 game with just under a minute remaining. The Hokies struggled a bit from the line in the final minute going 3-of-6 as the Eagles used it to their advantage closing the deficit to 80-79 with 12 seconds left. Hill stepped to the line, draining both, in the final seconds to help secure the Hokies’ win.

Hicks leads the Hokies, averaging 15.9 points, 5.2 assists and 3.7 steals per game. Sidney Cook is posting 13.5 ppg and 8.2 rpg. Magarity is averaging 13.3 ppg and 9.7 rebounds per game while Hill is adding 9.9 ppg and Panousis is chipping in 9.1 ppg.

THE TIGERS (14-15, 3-13 ACC)
Clemson had a bye during the last ACC games of the season, but fell to Georgia Tech 72-58 on Thursday. Nelly Perry led the Tigers with 22 points. Jaia Alexander added eight points while Victoria Cardaci had six. Danielle Edwards grabbed six rebounds.

The Tigers fell behind after scoring just 18 points in the opening half as the Yellow Jackets got out to 40-18 lead. Clemson looked to make a run in the second half, outscoring Georgia Tech 21-14 in the third to cut the game to 15 heading into the fourth. In the final frame, the Tigers closed within 12, but would get no closer as the Yellow Jackets held on for the win.

Perry leads the Tigers with 12.7 points per game. Aliyah Collier is adding 10.1 points while grabbing 8.0 rebounds per game. Edwards is handing out 2.4 assists per game.

THE SERIES
This is the 21st meeting between the Hokies and Tigers all-time and the second this season. The Hokies evened the series record at 10-10 earlier this season with a 78-69 win in Clemson.

Hicks and Hill dropped in 16 points each to lead Tech. Magarity tallied a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds while Cook chipped in 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

Edwards led the Tigers with 18 points. Cardaci tallied 13 points and Ivy Atkism tallied 12. Alexander knocked in 11 points while Collier had a double-double with 10 points, 13 rebounds.

Up Next: With a win, the Hokies would advance to face Louisville in the second round on Thursday, March 2 at 11 a.m.
