CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team was hot from long-range, connecting on 15-of-32, setting a new team record for most 3-pointers in a game, as the Hokies defeated Boston College 82-79 in the regular-season finale.
Regan Magarity led the Hokies (17-12, 4-12 ACC) with a career-high 26 points and 16 rebounds. Kendyl Brooks added a career-high 23 points, connecting on 7-of-12 from outside the arc. Chanette Hicks tallied 14 points, nine assists and three steals while Samantha Hill tallied 13 points and seven boards. Hicks’ steals set a new Tech career-record against ACC foes.
“It’s a great feeling because you can see them smile again,” said head coach Kenny Brooks. “They deserve it. They’ve been working hard. We’ve been through a lot of adversity and obviously it’s how you handle adversity at the end of the day. I looked down the bench while we’re playing and I have three available kids, but they never waivered, never felt sorry for themselves. We played hard and smart for 38 minutes. I thought the last two minutes kind of slipped away from us. This win gives us good momentum going into the tournament.”
The Hokies came out firing in the opening quarter, connecting on 6-of-10 from outside the arc, including two from both Brooks and Magarity. Tech took a 24-14 lead in to the next frame, but the Eagles fought back, opening the second with an 11-5 run to cut it 29-25 with 6:16 to go. Brooks hit her fourth 3-pointer of the game to push the Hokies back up by seven, but BC kept chipping away at the lead and tied it up 38-38 with 1:25 on the clock. A layup from Hicks in the final minute gave the Hokies the 40-38 advantage at the break.
Coming out of the intermission, Magarity went on her own 9-4 run to put the Hokies on top 49-42 after four minutes of play. The Eagles kept it close, cutting it to five a few times over rest of the frame, but the Hokies took a 58-50 lead into the final 10 minutes. Tech pushed their lead to the largest of the day, on top by 16 with 3:12 to go, but the Eagles kept battling and used a 12-2 run to cut it a 77-71 game with just under a minute remaining. The Hokies struggled a bit from the line in the final minute going 3-of-6 as the Eagles used it to their advantage closing the deficit to 80-79 with 12 seconds to go. Hill stepped to the line, draining both, in the final seconds to help secure the Hokies’ win.
Virginia Tech connected on 45.2 percent from the field, including an impressive 46.9 from outside the arc. The Eagles were 52.7 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from long-range. The Hokies held a 34-31 advantage on the boards and used 11 Eagles’ turnovers for 18 points.
Kelly Hughes led Boston College (9-20, 2-14 ACC) with 20 points. Taylor Ortlepp tallied 19 points while Mariella Fasoula and Georgia Pineau chipped in 14 and 13, respectively.
The Hokies will open the ACC Tournament on Wednesday, March 1. Seedings and times will be announced by the league office later this evening.
