Tech rally falls short against Virginia, 63-55
Cook has double-double with 15 points, 11 rebounds

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team rallied back from a 13-point deficit to cut it to one late in the fourth quarter, but Virginia held on in the final minute to secure the 63-55 win on Sunday afternoon in ACC action at Cassell Coliseum.
Sidney Cook led the Hokies (16-11, 3-11 ACC) with 15 points and 11 rebounds, recording her 11th double-double of the season. Chanette Hicks added 12 points, handed out six assists and tallied three steals. Vanessa Panousis chipped in eight points while Regan Magarity tallied eight points, six seven boards.
“Very disappointed,” said head coach Kenny Brooks. “I thought we played hard enough in spurts to win, but to win a game like this you have to put together a complete basketball game. UVA, they’re long, they’re tough, they’re athletic and you have to minimize your mistakes. We fought hard, we just didn’t play smart during stretches. But we’ll get back at it and continue to fight. I liked the effort much better than Thursday’s.”
The Cavaliers jumped out to the early lead in the game, but the Hokies kept it close trailing 9-7 with four minutes to go. UVA closed out the first with a 10-1 run to extend the lead to 19-8 at the quarter break. Virginia pushed its lead to 13 in the second quarter and led 25-13 before Tech went on a 7-0 run, cutting it to a 6-point game with 4:56 to go. The Cavaliers held on to the advantage and took a 37-27 lead into the break.
Both teams were sluggish on the offensive side in the third, as the Hokies closed within six before UVA again pushed it back to 10 and were on top 45-37 heading into the final 10 minutes. The Cavaliers were on top 52-42 early in the fourth, but the Hokies answered with a 9-0 run to cut it to a 1-point game with 2:39 to go. The Hokies still trailed by one with 90 seconds remaining, but UVA outscored Tech 9-2, including 7-of-7 from the line, to secure the win.
Virginia held a slight 38-36 advantage on the boards and tallied 13 second-chance points to the Hokies’ eight. The Cavaliers connected on 39 percent from the field while the Hokies shot 32.8 percent. UVA went to the line for 14-of-16 and Tech was 13-of-19.
Breyana Mason led UVA (18-9, 7-7 ACC) with 13 points. Dominique Toussaint and J’Kyra Brown each had 11 and Jocelyn Willoughby chipped in 10.
Tech will be back on the court Thursday, Feb. 23 when the Hokies host Miami. Game time is 7 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum and the Hokies will honor seniors Cook, Samantha Hill, Tara Nahodil and Panousis prior to tipoff.
