Pitt holds off Hokies, 72-64
Magarity tallies 18 points for Tech

PITTSBURGH – Pittsburgh went 13-of-14 from the line in the final minute to help hold off the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team, 72-64, on Thursday night in ACC play at Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Regan Magarity led the Hokies (16-10, 3-10 ACC) with 18 points and 16 rebounds. Chanette Hicks added 15 points, six rebounds and six assists while Samantha Hill tallied 14 points, six boards. Sidney Cook chipped in 10 points.
“I have no words; we’re obviously disappointed,” said head coach Kenny Brooks. “We were beating ourselves, we didn’t play well. We almost came up with rebounds, we almost came up with loose balls, we almost executed a play and when you do things like that in the ACC you’re going to get beat. I’m proud of the fact we fought back and took a lead, but as soon as we took a lead, we made terrible plays. You just squander it. We’re not playing well, we’re not confident right now.”
The teams traded points early in the opening quarter and were tied at 5-5 with 3:40 on the clock before the Hokies closed out the frame with an 11-0 run to take a 16-5 lead after holding the Panthers to 1-of-13 from the field. In the second, Tech maintained its advantage and was still up by 11 after three minutes of play, but the Panthers made a run, cutting it down to six with 4:34 to go. A 3-pointer from Hill pushed the Hokies back on top by nine (26-17), but Pitt scored the final two baskets of the half to cut it to a five-point game at the break.
Panthers came out firing in the third quarter, connecting on three consecutive long-range shots to go up 30-26 in the first two minutes. The Hokies scored four unanswered to tie it up at 30-30 with 5:43 to go, but Pitt responded with an 8-0 run that spanned the next three minutes. Virginia Tech outscored the Panthers 5-2 to close out the quarter, cutting it to 40-35 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Pitt again pushed the lead, going up by nine, but Tech answered with a 7-0 run to cut it to 44-42 with 6:54 to go. The Panthers scored the next two baskets, to go on top by five. The Hokies again responded behind five consecutive points from Diandra DaRosa and a jumper from Magarity to take a 49-47 lead with 5:04 remaining. Pitt’s 12-2 run gave the Panthers the lead again 59-51, but Cook completed the 3-point play to cut it back down to five heading into the final minute. Tech kept scoring, but the Panthers connected on 13-of-14 from the line as the Hokies got no closer than four the rest of the way.
Brenna Wise led the Panthers (13-13, 4-9 ACC) with 31 points. Jasmine Whitney added 13 points and eight rebounds while Aysia Bugg tallied 11 points and seven boards.
Pitt shot 43.1 percent from the field to the Hokies’ 36.2 percent. Both teams were solid from the line with Tech connecting on 17-of-21 and the Panthers going 24-of-29. On the boards, the teams kept it close with Pitt holding the slight 34-33 advantage.
Virginia Tech will return to the court on Sunday, Feb. 19 when the Hokies host in-state rival Virginia. Game time is set for 3 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum.
