Hokies fall to No. 17/17 NC State
Panousis tallies 20 points to lead Tech

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team fell 85-71 to No. 17/17 NC State on Sunday afternoon in ACC action at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Vanessa Panousis led the Hokies (16-9, 3-9 ACC) with 20 points on 4-of-7 from outside the arc. Sidney Cook added 18 points and six rebounds while Regan Magarity tallied 11 points and eight rebounds.
“NC State was better than us today,” said head coach Kenny Brooks. “We came out pretty well early in the game, but we had a rough offensive quarter in the second and let NC State get easy baskets on us. We dug ourselves into a hole that we were unable to overcome.”
The Wolfpack opened the game with a run to go up 6-2 early, but the Hokies answered with a 14-4 run of their own, taking a 16-10 advantage off a 3-pointer from Panousis. NC State outscored Tech 9-4 down the stretch, but the Hokies led 20-19 at the end of the quarter. The Wolfpack opened the second frame with another run and jumped out to a 34-23 lead midway through, but another 3-pointer from Panousis cut it back down to a single-digit deficit. NC State responded, outscoring the Hokies 16-2 the rest of the way to go into the break on top 50-28. Tech and NC State kept the scoring close in the second half, with the Hokies outscoring the Wolfpack 24-14 in the fourth, but Tech was unable to dig out of the deficit as the Wolfpack secured the win.
NC State was hot from the field, connecting on 53.3 percent from the field including an 8-of-19 clip from outside the arc. The Wolfpack went 13-of-20 from the line. Outside of a rough second quarter in which Tech shot just 15.4 percent, the Hokies connected on 40.3 percent from the field on the day while going 7-of-18 from long-range. The Hokies were 14-of-22 from the line.
The rebound battle was close with the Wolfpack pulling down 37 to Tech’s 36, but the Hokies had 17 second-chance points to NC State’s 12. Tech won the turnover battle, forcing 12 while giving it up just nine times.
Miah Spencer led the Wolfpack (19-6, 9-3 ACC) with 23 points. Dominique Wilson added 19 points.
Virginia Tech will be back on the court on Thursday, Feb. 16 at Pittsburgh. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Petersen Event Center.
