Tech takes to the road to face No. 17/17 NC State

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech women's basketball team is back on the road to face No. 17/17 NC State in a 2 p.m. game on Sunday, Feb. 12 at Reynolds Coliseum.

THE HOKIES (16-8, 3-8 ACC)
Virginia Tech battled Louisville for three quarters the last time out, but the Cardinals held out to win it 88-70. Chanette Hicks led the Hokies with 19 points, six rebounds and seven steals. With her first steal of the game, Hicks broke the single-season record of 91 which she set last season. Sidney Cook added 18 points and five boards while Samantha Hill tallied 13 points, six rebounds. Vanessa Panousis chipped in 12 points and three assists.

The first quarter went back and forth between the two teams with five ties, the last at 17-17 with just under two minutes to play, but the Cardinals took the 21-19 lead heading into the second. Tech tied it up in the opening seconds, and the teams continued to trade baskets over the next few minutes, knotted for the seventh time at 28-28. Louisville went on a 12-4 run to go on top 40-32, but the Hokies scored the final three points of the half to cut it to a five-point game at the break. Louisville held the lead through much of the third quarter, but the Hokies kept it close tied it up 54-54. The Cardinals held the 58-56 advantage heading into the final 10 minutes of the game. Tech quickly tied it up early in the fourth, but Louisville answered with an 11-0 run to go up 69-58. Tech got it back down to six (69-63), but the Cardinals closed out the game, outscoring the Hokies 19-7 in the final minutes.

Hicks leads the Hokies, averaging 16.5 points, 5.1 assists and 4.1 steals per game. Cook is posting 13.8 ppg and 8.6 rpg. Regan Magarity is averaging 13.0 ppg and 9.7 rebounds per game while Hill is adding 10.2 ppg.

THE WOLFPACK (18-6, 8-3 ACC)
NC State held on for a 75-67 win in overtime at Georgia Tech on Thursday. Dominique Wilson led the Wolfpack with 23 points. Ashley Williams added 16 points while Chelsea Nelson tallied 15. DD Rogers came off the bench for nine rebounds and three steals.

Georgia Tech held the lead through out the first half and was up 33-32 at the break. Coming out of the intermission, the Wolfpack claimed its first lead early in the third and went on 16-7 run to go on top 48-38. The Yellow Jackets answered with a 10-0 run to tie it up at 48-48 heading into the fourth. Georgia Tech took the lead in the fourth and were up 58-53, but NC State again responded to tie it and force the overtime. The Wolfpack never trailed in the extra frame to secure the win.

Wilson leads the Wolfpack on the season, averaging 12.0 points per game. Nelson is adding 11.5 ppg and 6.5 rpg. Miah Spencer is chipping in 11.4 points and 4.75 assists per game.

THE SERIES
This is the 18th meeting in the series with the Wolfpack holding a 16-1 lead and won the most recent last season 72-61 in Blacksburg. Former Hokie player Hannah Young had 14 points for Tech. Panousis tallied nine and Hicks had eight. Wilson dropped in 25 points while Spencer tallied 14 and Rogers chipped in 10.

The Hokies’ win over the Wolfpack came on March 4, 2015 on the opening day of the ACC Tournament in exciting fashion. Young connected on a buzzer-beater from the wing to claim the 57-56 win. Panousis led the team with 19 points while Cook tallied 12. Spencer had 19 for the Wolfpack.

Up Next: Virginia Tech remains on the road to face Pittsburgh on Thursday, Feb. 16. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Petersen Center.
