No. RV/RV Tech set to host No. 7/8 Notre Dame

BLACKSBURG - The No. RV/RV Virginia Tech women's basketball team is set to host No. 7/8 Notre Dame on Thursday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum. The contest marks Tech's annual Military Appreciation and Corps of Cadets Appreciation game.

THE HOKIES (16-5 3-5 ACC)
Virginia Tech was held off by Syracuse 82-72 the last time out. Sidney Cook led a quartet of Hokies in double-digits with 22 points. Regan Magarity added 15 points, grabbed seven rebounds and had three blocks. Samantha Hill recorded 13 points while Chanette Hicks had 13 points, eight assists and six steals.

The Hokies trailed the Orange 23-13, but Cook completed the three-point play in the final minute to cut it to 23-16 at the end of the frame. Tech got it down to a four-point, 31-27 game just short of the mid-point in the second, but Cuse again answered with a run, outscoring the Hokies 18-5 to close out the half and take a 49-33 advantage into the break. Syracuse pushed its lead to 18 early in the third quarter, but the Hokies went on a 10-0 run, fueled by five points from Magarity, to cut it to 54-46 with 3:09 to go. The Orange took a 60-49 lead heading into the final 10 minutes. Cuse again pushed the lead to 15, but the Hokies chipped away at it and used a 7-0 run to cut it to 71-65 with 2:46 to go. Syracuse outscored the Hokies 11-2, including 8-of-10 from the line, down the stretch until Tech knocked in back-to-back baskets in the final seconds.

Hicks leads the Hokies, averaging 15.9 points, 5.09 assists and 3.9 steals per game. Cook is posting 14.0 ppg and 9.2 rpg. Magarity is averaging 13.3 ppg and 10.0 rebounds per game while Hill is adding 10.1 ppg.

Magarity is currently one of two players in the ACC averaging a double-double overall on the season along with Milan Quinn of Wake Forest (11.3 ppg/10.2 rpg). In league play Magarity has upped her numbers with 14.5 ppg, 11.6 rpg.

THE FIGHTING IRISH (20-3, 8-1 ACC)
Notre Dame secured an 82-74 win over Virginia on Sunday. Marina Mabrey had 26 points for the Irish while Arike Ogunbowale added 21. Lindsay Allen tallied 11 rebounds and 10 assists.

The Irish held just a 44-36 lead at the break, but was able to hold the Cavaliers from going on a run in the third as Notre Dame outscored UVA 17-16 to maintain the advantage. In the final frame, UVA held a slight one-point advantage in the score column, but ultimately the Irish closed out the game for the win.

Briana Turner leads the Irish on the season, averaging 14.9 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. Ogunbowale is adding 14.7 ppg while Mabrey is tallying 8.5 ppg. Allen has dished out 176 assists, averaging 7.7 per game.

THE SERIES
Notre Dame holds the lead in the series 8-1 and won last season’s contest 80-41 in Indiana. The Hokies’ win over the Irish came on Feb. 9, 2003 when Tech secured a 53-50 decision in Blacksburg.

Last season’s match-up saw Cook drop in 21 points and grab nine rebounds for the Hokies. Vanessa Panousis added 10 points. Turner had 18 points and six rebounds for the Irish, Ogunbowale tallied 15 points and Mabrey notched 12.

In Tech’s win over the Irish, former Hokie Ieva Kublina dropped in 21 points to lead the way.
