CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 19/21 Virginia Tech women’s basketball team fell to in-state rival Virginia 76-27 on Thursday night at JPJ Arena.

“We are disappointed with our effort, but you have to give credit to Virginia,” said head coach Kenny Brooks. “I can say we missed shots, but I thought they made us miss shots. They put us in a position we weren’t comfortable in and we never really got going.”

Regan Magarity led Tech (16-4, 3-4 ACC) with eight points and 10 rebounds. Chanette Hicks added seven points and tallied two assists.

UVA opened the game on a 15-5 run to go up by 10 after six minutes of play. Tech scored the next six to cut it to a four-point game heading into the final minute, but the Cavaliers connected to take an 18-11 lead. UVA kept the run going into the next frame, scoring 13 unanswered to go on top 31-11 with 4:29 on the clock. Tech scored just five points in the frame as the Cavaliers took a 41-16 advantage into the break. The second half was not any kinder to the Hokies as UVA outscored Tech 21-2 in the third quarter. Virginia also held the advantage in the final 10 minutes, 14-9 to roll to the win.

Tech connected on 18.8 percent from the field while the Cavaliers hit 51.9 percent. UVA held a 49-33 advantage on the boards and recorded 14 second-chance points.

The Hokies will be back on the court Sunday, Jan. 29 when they host Syracuse. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum.
