No. 19/21 Hokies hit the road to face in-state rival Virginia

BLACKSBURG - The No. 19/21 Virginia Tech women's basketball team is set to take to the road to face in-state ACC rival Virginia on Thursday, Jan. 26. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville.

THE HOKIES (16-3, 3-3 ACC)
Virginia Tech fell to No. 6/7 Florida State the last time out. Chanette Hicks led the Hokies with 18 points. Sidney Cook and Regan Magarity each tallied double-doubles with Cook posting 16 points and 11 boards while Magarity had 10 points, 11 rebounds. Magarity’s was her seventh consecutive, breaking a program record of consecutive games with double-doubles set twice previously.

The Hokies and Noles kept it close early in the opening quarter as Tech led 7-6 with 3:55 to go before FSU went on an 11-2 run to close it out and take a 17-9 lead. Tech opened the second quarter, cutting it down to a five-point game, but the Noles again answered with a 14-4 run to take their largest lead of the half up 31-16 with just over two minutes to go. The Hokies outscored FSU 6-2 down the stretch to cut it to a 33-22 game at the break. Florida State opened the third with a 16-4 run to go on top 50-26 just past the midway point. Tech was unable to get much of a run going in the frame as the Noles shot 75 percent from the field, outscoring Tech 27-14. The Hokies went on a 9-0 run midway through the fourth to cut it down to 19, but would get no closer the rest of the way as FSU closed out the game the game with a 16-7 clip.

Hicks leads the Hokies, averaging 16.5 points, 5.1 assists and 3.9 steals per game. Cook is posting 14.1 ppg and 9.6 rpg. Magarity is averaging 13.5 ppg and 10.2 rebounds per game while Samantha Hill is adding 10.3 ppg.

Magarity is currently one of two players in the ACC averaging a double-double overall on the season along with Milan Quinn of Wake Forest (11.2 ppg/10.3 rpg). In league play Magarity has upped her numbers with 15.5 ppg, 12.7 rpg.

THE CAVALIERS (13-6, 2-4 ACC)
Virginia fell to Pitt 62-54 on Sunday. J’Kyra Brown led the Cavaliers, coming off the bench for 10 points and six rebounds. Dominique Toussaint, Jocelyn Willoughby and Aliyah Huland El each added nine points.

The first quarter ended in a 12-12 tie between the two teams before Pitt came out for a 17-10 clip in the second frame to take a 29-22 lead into the break. UVA opened the third with a 6-0 run to cut it to a one-point game, but Pitt again pulled ahead to go on top by five. The Cavaliers took a 38-37 lead late in the quarter, but Pitt scored the final basket to lead 39-38 heading into the fourth. UVA reclaimed the advantage and led 49-43 midway through the quarter, but Pitt closed out the game with a 19-6 run to secure the win.

Lauren Moses leads the Cavaliers with 11.1 points per game. Huland El is adding 9.6 ppg and Breyana Mason is chipping in 9.5 ppg. Willoughby leads on the boards with 6.4 rpg.

THE SERIES
The series against UVA marks one of the oldest in program history with the two teams meeting every season except 1991-92 since 1976. UVA holds the series record at 45-10, but the Hokies claimed both meetings last season, including a 66-46 win in Charlottesville.

In that contest, Cook led the Hokies with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Former Tech player Hannah Young added 16 and Hicks tallied 11 points and eight assists. Mason led the Cavaliers with 14 points while Moses tallied 13.
