BLACKSBURG – The No. 17/16 Virginia Tech women’s basketball team dropped an 82-54 decision to No. 7/6 Florida State on Sunday afternoon in ACC action at Cassell Coliseum.

Regan Magarity recorded her seventh straight double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, setting a new program record for consecutive double-doubles. The previous record was six, tied by Uju Ugoka in 2013 and originally set by Karen Garbis in 1978.

Chanette Hicks led the Hokies (16-3, 3-3 ACC) with 18 points on 7-of-15 from the field. Sidney Cook added 16 points and 11 boards for her 10th double-double of the season.

“Very disappointed, it’s the second game in a row I’ve felt like we really lost our composure,” said head coach Kenny Brooks. “First and foremost give Florida State credit, they are ranked seventh in the country and are probably a little bit better than that. They’re extremely talented, well balanced and probably one of the best defensive teams we’ve played all year. It was very tough for us, I was disappointed in the way we competed and we were just out-of-sorts pretty much the whole game. We will regroup and try to get ready for another tough week coming up.”

The Hokies and Noles kept it close early in the opening quarter as Tech led 7-6 with 3:55 to go before FSU went on an 11-2 run to close it out and take a 17-9 lead. Tech opened the second quarter, cutting it down to a five-point game, but the Noles again answered with a 14-4 run to take their largest lead of the half up 31-16 with just over two minutes to go. The Hokies outscored FSU 6-2 down the stretch to cut it to a 33-22 game at the break.

Florida State opened the third with a 16-4 run to go on top 50-26 just past the midway point. Tech was unable to get much of a run going in the frame as the Noles shot 75 percent from the field, outscoring Tech 27-14. The Hokies went on a 9-0 run midway through the fourth to cut it down to 19 (66-47) with 5:04 to go, but would get no closer the rest of the way as FSU closed out the game the game with a 16-7 clip.

The Seminoles forced the Hokies into 28 turnovers for 33 points. FSU outrebounded Tech 41-35, but the Hokies held a 19-15 advantage in second-chance points.

Leticia Romero led the Seminoles (19-2, 7-1 ACC) with 18 points while Shakayla Thomas added 17. Brittany Brown tallied 13 and Chatrice White came off the bench for 11.

Virginia Tech will be back on the court Thursday, Jan. 26 when the Hokies travel to Charlottesville to face in-state ACC rival Virginia. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at JPJ Arena.
