THE HOKIES (16-2, 3-2 ACC)
Virginia Tech fell to No. 15/16 Duke the last time out. Sidney Cook and Kendyl Brooks led the Hokies with 15 points each while Cook also grabbed 12 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season. Regan Magarity recorded her sixth consecutive double-double with 13 rebounds and 11 assists, tying her for the longest streak in program history.
Duke got out to the early lead up 7-4 before the Hokies went on a 13-5 run to go up 16-12 with 2:40 to go in the quarter. The Hokies were on top 21-16 heading into the second before the Blue Devils answered with a 13-3, taking a 29-24 advantage just shy of the midway point. Tech tied it up with 4:20 to go, but Duke closed out the half with a 9-3 run to take a 38-32 lead into the break. The Blue Devils opened the third frame with a 16-0 run and took their largest lead up 65-36 with 2:45 on the clock. Brooks connected from 3-point range on three consecutive trips down the court, but Tech was unable to get a run going on the offensive side as Duke shot 71.4 percent in the frame. Tech got no closer than 20 the rest of the game.
Chanette Hicks leads the Hokies, averaging 16.4 points, 5.3 assists and 4.1 steals per game. Cook is posting 14.0 ppg and 9.6 rpg. Magarity is averaging 13.7 ppg and 10.1 rebounds per game while Samantha Hill is adding 10.7 ppg.
Magarity is currently one of two players in the ACC averaging a double-double overall on the season along with Milan Quinn of Wake Forest with 11.3 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. In league play Magarity has upped her numbers with 16.6 ppg, 13.0 rpg.
THE SEMINOLES (18-2, 6-1 ACC)
Florida State rolled past Syracuse 77-58 on Thursday night in Tallahassee. Shakayla Thomas led four Seminoles in double-digits with 17 points. Leticia Romero added 12 and Imani Wright had 11. Ivey Slaughter rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10 points.
The Seminoles got out early on the Orange outscoring Syracuse 26-7 in the opening frame. The next two quarters were more even, but the Seminoles still held the scoring advantage in both, outscoring the Orange 19-13 in the second and 19-17 in the third. The final frame saw an offensive surge from Syracuse, holding a 21-13 advantage, but it was not enough to overcome the Noles as FSU connected on 53.7 percent from the field in the game.
Romero and Thomas lead the Seminoles on the season, averaging 13.8 points per game each. Wright is adding 11.7 ppg and Slaughter is tallying 10.2 points and a team-high 6.2 rebounds per game.
THE SERIES
This is one of the longest running series in Tech history and marks the 36th meeting between the Hokies and the Seminoles with FSU leading 25-10. This is the first time in the history that both teams have been ranked when squaring off.
In last season’s contest, FSU picked up the win at home 68-50. Hicks led the Hokies with 10 points, six assists and five steals while Magarity and Cook each tallied nine points. Thomas came off the bench for the Noles to drop in 22 points.
Up Next: Virginia Tech will be back on the road to face in-state rival Virginia on Thursday, Jan. 26. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at JPJ Arena.
